Green procurement
Green procurement prioritizes environmental considerations in purchasing decisions, selecting products and suppliers that minimize ecological impact through reduced emissions, waste, energy consumption, and use of hazardous materials.
Examples
Eco-label requirements: Procurement specifies that cleaning products must carry recognized eco-certifications, ensuring reduced chemical toxicity and environmental impact without requiring internal expertise to evaluate every formulation.
Energy-efficient equipment: When purchasing IT infrastructure, procurement weights energy consumption as a criterion alongside performance and price, selecting servers that reduce lifetime operating costs and carbon footprint.
Packaging reduction: Procurement negotiates with suppliers to eliminate unnecessary packaging, switch to recyclable materials, and implement returnable container programs that reduce waste going to landfill.
Definition
Green procurement extends environmental responsibility into the supply chain. Since purchased goods and services often represent the majority of an organization's environmental footprint, how and what procurement buys has outsized impact on sustainability outcomes.
Implementation ranges from simple (specifying recycled paper) to complex (lifecycle assessments comparing the full environmental impact of alternative materials or processes). The appropriate level depends on spend significance, environmental impact potential, and organizational maturity.
Green procurement often delivers cost savings alongside environmental benefits. Energy-efficient equipment costs less to operate; reduced packaging costs less to transport and dispose of; and waste reduction eliminates disposal costs. These co-benefits help build the business case.
Challenges include: higher upfront costs for some green alternatives, limited supply of certified sustainable options in certain categories, difficulty comparing environmental claims across suppliers, and resistance from stakeholders focused solely on unit price.
