What this tells a buyer

Wiring Harness, Vision Systems, and Modules and Polymer Products together account for over 95 percent of group revenues, making Motherson one of the few suppliers with genuine multi-technology scale across cockpit, body, and electrical systems.

The group's order book stood at approximately US $96 billion as of May 2026, covering automotive and non-automotive programs, with 14 new plants under construction entering FY2026.

A stated 15-percent revenue-concentration limit per customer is a structural discipline enforced across five-year plans published annually since 2000.

What Motherson makes

Motherson operates across 13 business divisions, three of which account for more than 95 percent of group revenues: Wiring Harness, Vision Systems, and Modules and Polymer Products (MPP). The wiring harness division is one of the most vertically integrated operations in the sector, handling design, development, and manufacturing in-house and supplying power and data networks to automotive and non-automotive transport applications globally. Vision Systems covers interior mirrors, exterior mirrors, and camera-based detection systems; the company supplies original equipment manufacturers across virtually all major global brands. MPP produces a range from simple injection-moulded plastic parts to fully integrated cockpit and door modules, with in-house capability in mould design and tooling.

Beyond the three flagship divisions, the group supplies integrated cockpit module assemblies through its Integrated Assemblies division (operating as Motherson SAS, a Tier 0.5 supplier to several European OEMs), precision metal components and exhaust, brake, and drivetrain parts through Vehicle Systems, elastomers and rubber compounds through its Elastomers division, and exterior lighting along with HVAC compressors and body control modules through Lighting and Electronics. More recent additions include Aerospace, Technology and Industrial Solutions, Motherson Medical, Services, and Logistics. This breadth is intentional -- the group's five-year plans since the late 1990s have consistently targeted diversification across products, customers, and geographies, with a stated target of no single customer exceeding 15 percent of revenues.

Financial performance

Per the Berylls Strategy Advisors Top-100 automotive supplier study, Motherson Group posted automotive-sector revenue of approximately €11.7 billion in FY2025 (the financial year ending March 2025), against €12.1 billion the prior year, a decline of about 2.6 percent in EUR terms. The company's investor materials note that some year-on-year movements in reported EUR figures reflect perimeter changes from acquisitions and disposals rather than organic volume loss. On a consolidated group basis -- including non-automotive segments -- audited revenue from operations reached INR 1,136,626 million (approximately €12.8 billion at prevailing rates) in FY2025.

In FY2026 (ending March 2026), the group posted its highest-ever annual revenue: INR 1,261,037 million in consolidated revenue from operations, an increase of nearly 11 percent year-on-year. The company reported an EBITDA of approximately INR 120,330 million, equating to a margin of roughly 9.5 percent, and profit after tax attributable to shareholders of INR 38,597 million. Management noted that net-debt-to-EBITDA reached its lowest level in the company's history and that the order book stood at approximately US $96 billion. The group spent INR 44 billion in capital expenditure during FY2025, with 14 new plants under construction. Profitability on an operating income basis ran at approximately 5.6 to 5.8 percent of revenue in the two most recent financial years, calculated from published profit-before-depreciation-interest-and-tax figures less depreciation. Berylls notes that profitability was not separately published in their FY2025 edition for this company.

The group employs over 205,000 people globally, per its own global presence page, across 475-plus facilities in 47 countries.

Ownership and history

Motherson was founded in 1975 in Delhi by Vivek Chaand Sehgal and his late mother, Shrimati Swaran Lata Sehgal -- hence the name. The company began as a trading firm and shifted to electrical cable manufacturing in the late 1970s. The automotive pivot came in 1983, when Sehgal supplied wiring harnesses for the Maruti Suzuki 800, the first affordable car assembled in India. In 1986, the company established Motherson Sumi Systems Limited as a joint venture with Sumitomo Wiring Systems of Japan; that entity listed on Indian stock exchanges in 1993 and became the group's public flagship.

International expansion accelerated after 2002, when the company acquired Wexford Electronics in Ireland -- its first overseas plant -- and relocated the facility to Sharjah in 10 weeks without interrupting customer supply. Between 2002 and 2007, five of six acquisitions were European. The group renamed itself Samvardhana Motherson International Limited (SAMIL) through a corporate restructuring in 2022, integrating several previously separate listed and unlisted entities under one holding company. Its CIN is L35106MH1986PLC284510. By the time of its 50th anniversary in FY2025, the group had executed over 45 acquisitions and expanded to 47 countries.

Key management as of FY2026: Vivek Chaand Sehgal serves as Chairman; his son Laksh Vaaman Sehgal is Director and Vice Chairman; Pankaj Mital is Whole-time Director and President of SAMIL; Gandharv Tongia is Group Chief Financial Officer.

Certifications and quality

Motherson automotive plants operate under IATF 16949, the sector-standard quality management system for automotive production parts. The company has published a current IATF 16949 certificate for its SMIA (Samvardhana Motherson Innovative Autosystems) plant in Michelau, Germany, issued by Bureau Veritas Certification in June 2024 with an expiry of June 2027 (certificate number 0524137). Individual plant certificates cover specific manufacturing scopes, with APQP and PPAP documented as standard procedures across the group's automotive supply chains. The group's supplier code of conduct and quality management standards are published on the company's site and cover all supply-chain tiers.

Known customers

Motherson's customer list spans virtually all major global OEMs. The company's own history documents relationships with Maruti Suzuki from 1983, Tata from 1991, Mercedes-Benz from 1995, Ford and Hyundai from 1997, and Caterpillar in the off-road segment from 2001. Investor presentations and analyst materials confirm ongoing relationships with BMW, Volkswagen Group, Toyota, and other global OEMs. Motherson's Integrated Assemblies division (MSAS) won new cockpit programs with multiple European OEMs in Germany, Czech Republic, Spain, and Turkey during FY2025, including at least one electric vehicle manufacturer, per the company's annual report. The group maintains a stated policy of limiting no single customer to more than 15 percent of revenues, which analysts have characterized as a meaningful structural discipline.
