AI integration is accelerating and streamlining operations as procurement teams continue to seek new ways to simplify the sourcing process.

LightSource, an AI-powered direct sourcing platform, has introduced "AI Workforce" to optimise sourcing management. The solution breaks the sourcing workflow into five distinct components, giving procurement professionals greater visibility across each stage of the process.

The AI platform is designed to improve productivity throughout the sourcing cycle, as the company reports that only 18% of procurement teams are using a professional sourcing tool.

AI adoption reshapes procurement sourcing

Data from Procurement Teams indicates that AI is used by 71.3% of procurement professionals at least three days each week, with 48.4% incorporating it into their daily operations.

The direct procurement professional has been under-tooled for decades.

At the same time, 82.8% of organisations operate without an actively enforced AI governance framework. Meanwhile, 73.8% of companies manage fragmented or consolidating procurement processes, leaving just 9.8% with fully governed or AI-ready procurement data.

According to LightSource, these findings reinforce the need for an AI Workforce. Spencer Penn, CEO and Co-Founder of LightSource, says: “The direct procurement professional has been under-tooled for decades.

“We built LightSource to fix that. These new capabilities give CPOs the ability to act, not just advise, across the full sourcing cycle.”

Five tools supporting sourcing decisions

LightSource's AI Workforce is built around five core capabilities: Ask LightSource, Item Ingestion & Data Clean Up, RFX Setup, Supplier Activation and Award Optimisation.

Ask LightSource enables procurement teams to access instant answers on spending, suppliers, sourcing history and pipeline activity, while providing actionable insights.

Item Ingestion & Data Clean Up transforms files into structured item data and merges information to simplify sourcing workflows.

RFX Setup creates a structured framework that improves productivity, reduces formatting time and provides a reusable foundation for future sourcing events.

Supplier Activation automates deadline reminders, responds to supplier queries and helps ensure quotes are received accurately and on time.

Award Optimisation enables procurement teams to define sourcing requirements, apply custom constraints and tailor award scenarios to produce negotiation-ready outcomes.

Investment supports AI procurement capabilities

In 2025, LightSource secured US$33m in Seed and Series A funding to accelerate its efforts to modernise procurement. The funding round was led by Lightspeed and Bain Capital Ventures (BCV).

Spencer says: “The global supply chain has been thrust into the spotlight in recent years, exposing its vulnerabilities but also inciting a wave of new technologies like AI to strengthen this critical Industry.
