LightSource vs. Ivalua

Ivalua is a deeply configurable source-to-pay suite that large enterprises use to govern every category of spend, from sourcing through invoicing and payments. It was built in-house on one code base, and its one recorded acquisition, Directworks in 2017, was folded into the platform, so its complexity sits in configuration and implementation rather than between acquired applications. LightSource is the AI-native direct materials operating system: it takes engineered parts from spec through scale, with 20,000 suppliers already live on a network that is free for them.

Notes use three words deliberately: "Native" works day one, "Configured" arrives through an implementation project, and "Marketed" appears on the vendor's site with day-one delivery undocumented. "Not documented" means the vendor does not publicly document this capability as of Sep 22, 2026; it may exist, and we note the gap rather than guess. Ratings reflect public documentation as of Sep 22, 2026.

Cost breakdowns: the test to run in every demo

LightSource bid sheets carry true flexible cost breakdowns: the event owner defines a category-specific structure per event, and suppliers fill it in. No other sourcing solution offers this natively. In every demo, ask the vendor to change a live cost model and count the steps.

Where Ivalua is strong: suite breadth for enterprise-wide spend

Ivalua's genuine strength is breadth on one code base: sourcing, contracts, supplier management, spend analysis, eProcurement, invoicing, payments, and expenses, with multi-ERP coexistence (SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Workday) among its most praised traits. Large, multi-business-unit enterprises that need to model non-standard processes choose it for its no/low-code configurability, and its supplier portal is free. The company reported $235M in 2025 revenue with 24% growth at Ivalua NOW 2026, and its IVA Studio agentic AI layer, announced in June 2026, was slated for general availability in summer 2026.

On direct materials, read the module list with care. Ivalua acquired Directworks in 2017 and markets BOM Lifecycle Manager, NPI and APQP modules, and Total Landed Cost Intelligence, with manufacturers including Whirlpool, Michelin, and Flex as named customers. Those pages describe what can be configured, not what a sourcing team gets on day one: the modules are fed by ERP and PLM sync plus configured bid-sheet templates, and standing them up is integrator work on a platform built first for indirect and general spend.

That breadth was built in-house rather than assembled. Founded in France in 2000, Ivalua developed the suite on one code base with a common data model; its only publicly recorded acquisition, the Wexford, Pennsylvania direct-materials specialist Directworks (October 2017, formerly Co-eXprise), was folded into the platform rather than run as a separate product, and the resulting bill of materials capabilities shipped in Platform Release 160 in September 2018. Hg, which invested in December 2024, describes the platform to its own shareholders as organically built. For a buyer, the practical consequence is that turning Ivalua into a direct-materials workflow is configuration and integrator work on one platform; in our assessment that is a different load from the seams between acquired applications that reviewers describe at suites assembled by acquisition, and it is the load the reviews later on this page describe.

Where LightSource is stronger for direct-materials work

LightSource is built entirely around the part. Items are revision-managed, drawings attach to RFQ line items, and nested bill of materials structures support snapshots, diffs, and cost roll-ups. AI runs through the daily workflow rather than beside it: Item Ingestion turns Excel files, PDFs, and drawings into structured items (it processed 3,300+ items in its first month), RFX Setup builds quote formats in about 15 minutes, and AI bid analysis normalizes and compares supplier quotes in any format. Bid sheets carry true flexible cost breakdowns (CBD), structured per category, which no other sourcing solution offers natively. Ivalua's model, by contrast, relies on ERP and PLM sync plus configured bid-sheet templates that suppliers key data into.

The supplier side compounds the difference. 20,000 suppliers are live on the LightSource network, access is free, and onboarding takes under 30 minutes; on Ivalua, each customer onboards its own supplier base into its own instance. Manufacturers such as BRP, Canada Goose, HelloFresh, Shure, and Arxada run LightSource today, and LightSource was named a Gartner Cool Vendor 2025 (Sourcing and Procurement Technology). The company emerged from stealth in March 2025 with $33M in venture backing co-led by Lightspeed and Bain Capital Ventures. Customer results are on our customers page.

Configurability and time-to-value pull in opposite directions

The clearest difference between the two products is what each one asks of your organization. Ivalua's defining strength is configurability: its no/low-code Design Mode lets a complex enterprise model almost any process, which is exactly why large, multi-business-unit companies choose it. That flexibility has a cost. Deployments are typically led by systems integrators, administration requires trained specialists, and the platform runs on a recurring version-upgrade cycle. Third-party analysts report a starting subscription around $150,000 per year (ERP Research) and implementation engagements at 80 to 140 percent of year-one subscription for full-suite deployments (VendorBenchmark); treat both as estimates, since Ivalua quotes are custom.

LightSource makes the opposite trade. The workflow is opinionated around direct-materials sourcing, so there is far less to configure: teams go live in days on flat files, run sourcing in about 30 days, and implementation is included in the subscription. If you need one platform to govern every step of source-to-pay across all spend, Ivalua's configurability earns its cost. If the job is sourcing parts, the configuration project is overhead between you and your first awarded quote.

Running Ivalua and LightSource together

A realistic coexistence pattern exists. Ivalua stays the enterprise spend backbone: eProcurement, AP automation, invoicing, payments, and all-spend supplier risk and compliance. LightSource runs the direct-materials sourcing workbench: the item and BOM master for sourcing, part-level RFQs to a 20,000-supplier network, AI bid analysis, award scenarios, and savings tracking. Awarded pricing flows to your ERP through the GraphQL API or flat-file export, and awarded contracts can be recorded in the suite's contract module.

Unlike a pure procure-to-pay vendor, Ivalua does sell sourcing and direct-materials modules, so the division of labor here is about depth and speed rather than absence. In practice, teams that run engineered-part RFQs through configured suite bid sheets tend to fall back to spreadsheets for the actual analysis and wait on integrators for workflow changes. Pairing the two products lets buyers do daily part-level sourcing in a purpose-built tool while Ivalua continues to carry the transactional, contract, and governance workflows it was bought for.

What implementation looks like if you add LightSource

LightSource implementations start with data you already have. Flat-file uploads and AI Item Ingestion structure the item master (messy spreadsheets are fine, clean data is not a precondition), quote-format and RFI templates are maintained by LightSource, and RFX Setup drafts event scaffolding in about 15 minutes. Most teams start with a one-program or one-commodity pilot, invite their suppliers (free, under 30 minutes to onboard), and run their first sourcing event within about 30 days.

Implementation is included in the subscription rather than sold as a separate engagement, and nearly half of LightSource's organization is deployment and implementation staff, all ex-McKinsey. Adoption is the measure that matters: BRP moved from a voluntary rollout to a mandatory one, HelloFresh mandated adoption across its team and vendors, and Canada Goose's SVP of Operations describes a sourcing engine his team and suppliers "actually adopted."

What public reviewers say

On G2, Ivalua holds about 4.3/5 across about 84 reviews and LightSource holds 4.9/5 across a small early base of about 11 reviews, both as of September 2026. The review bases differ by an order of magnitude, so read them differently: a large base shows patterns at scale, a small base shows what early customers say. Both links go to the full, unfiltered review pages.

The most useful Ivalua reviews hold both thoughts at once. One reviewer rated the platform 5/5 for what its admins could build on it:

"I like the intuitivity of the system and the fact that admins have a lot of possibilities to improve the system according to the organization needs. For quality processes, we were able to add closure statuses at process closure, which made the solution feasible for automotive use. We were able to upload data from SAP into tables to populate performance scorecards and automate risk and performance scorecard generation."

-- G2 reviewer (Enterprise, 2026)

The same five-star review is equally specific about how that capability arrived:

"There were huge issues with functional guidance from implementation partners. We struggled understanding how to translate our processes in the best standard solutions in Ivalua and our implementation partner did not guide us well and proposed solutions that were not standard at all."

-- G2 reviewer (Enterprise, 2026)

A mid-market reviewer, rating it 3.5/5, is blunter about daily use:

"I find Ivalua not very user-friendly. The system isn't intuitive, which makes it hard to navigate. There are a lot of steps, and the order to complete them doesn't always make sense. Plus, there are too many clicks and saves in between, which makes the process tedious. The initial setup wasn't very easy either."

-- G2 reviewer (Mid-Market, 2026)

Verified enterprise reviewers on other platforms echo the same pattern: consistent praise for Ivalua's configurability and its ability to coexist with complex ERP landscapes, alongside recurring reservations about the deep configuration knowledge it demands, the dependence on implementation partners, and support continuity when account teams change.

LightSource's early reviews are specific about the sourcing workflow itself:

"The platform allows for the seamless addition of RFP items/SKUs and BOM details through a simple drop/drag feature. Easy to add suppliers and RFP details to launch an RFP within minutes ... The platform also has a robust set of analysis tools to quickly compare the different supplier responses, calculate forecasted savings and identify best of the best pricing for the RFP ... We typically see a company deploy LightSource within a day or two."

-- G2 reviewer (Mid-Market, 2024)

And the most substantive criticism in the LightSource base, from a reviewer answering what they dislike, is about first-time supplier activation:

"The biggest challenge of LightSource is just getting the suppliers to try it. Once they try it --- they're also hooked. I've had a bunch of suppliers ask me about how to get access for their own procurement team. It's a great sign! But, you have to nudge vendors a bit to use it for the first time."

-- G2 reviewer (Mid-Market, 2024)

When to choose what

Choose Ivalua if

  • You are consolidating all spend (direct, indirect, services) plus P2P, invoicing, and payments on one platform

  • You are a large, multi-business-unit or regulated enterprise with non-standard processes that need deep configuration

  • Supplier risk and compliance governance across tens of thousands of suppliers is the anchor use case

  • You have the IT maturity, integrator budget, and admin staffing to run a configurable suite and its upgrade cycle

  • Contract lifecycle management and company-wide spend analytics must come from the same vendor

Choose LightSource if

  • Your buyers source engineered parts every week and need RFQs with drawings, revisions, and BOM cost roll-ups on day one

  • You need sourcing running in about 30 days without an integrator-led program

  • You want suppliers quoting immediately from a live network of 20,000 rather than onboarding your own base instance by instance

  • A lean team must run the platform without certified admins or a systems integrator on retainer

  • You are a mid-market or growth-stage manufacturer and a full-suite commitment plus a separate implementation engagement is out of proportion to the sourcing problem

RUNNING BOTH

Keep Ivalua where its breadth earns its keep (eProcurement, AP automation, payments, contracts, all-spend supplier governance) and run LightSource as the direct-materials sourcing workbench, feeding awarded pricing back to your ERP through its GraphQL API or flat files. Because Ivalua sells direct-materials modules of its own, this is a depth-and-speed split rather than a modules split; the practical question is where your buyers do their daily part-level work. Teams that pair the two keep suite governance intact while giving buyers a purpose-built tool for ingesting BOMs, comparing quotes, and awarding business.

Frequently asked questions

Is LightSource a replacement for Ivalua?

Only for the sourcing side. LightSource replaces the direct-materials sourcing workflow (item and BOM data, RFQs, quote analysis, awards, supplier management) but has no procure-to-pay: no requisitions, purchase orders, or invoicing. If Ivalua is your P2P and compliance backbone, LightSource complements it rather than replacing it. If you licensed Ivalua primarily for direct-materials sourcing, LightSource can take over that job.

Can LightSource and Ivalua work together?

Yes. A common division keeps Ivalua for eProcurement, invoicing, payments, and all-spend supplier governance while LightSource runs part-level RFQs, AI bid analysis, and award scenarios. Awarded pricing exports to your ERP or data warehouse through LightSource's GraphQL API or flat files, and awarded contracts can be recorded in Ivalua's contract module.

How long does each platform take to implement?

LightSource customers go live in days on flat-file uploads and typically run sourcing within about 30 days, with implementation included in the subscription. Ivalua deployments are integrator-led enterprise programs measured in months, and third-party analysts report implementation engagements at 80 to 140 percent of year-one subscription for full-suite rollouts (VendorBenchmark). The gap reflects scope: Ivalua projects usually configure many modules across all spend.

How are LightSource and Ivalua priced?

Ivalua is custom-quoted, with modular pricing driven by spend under management, supplier count, users, and modules activated; third-party analysts report a starting point around $150,000 per year (ERP Research), with implementation sold as a separate engagement. LightSource prices as a platform subscription plus seats, with implementation included and supplier access always free. Both vendors quote individually, so treat published figures as estimates.

Does Ivalua really handle direct materials?

Ivalua markets more direct-materials modules than any other suite: BOM Lifecycle Manager, NPI and APQP modules, and Total Landed Cost Intelligence, built up from its 2017 Directworks acquisition. What the module list does not show is the working reality: capability arrives through ERP and PLM sync and configured templates, stood up by integrators, on a platform whose center of gravity is indirect and general spend. LightSource is purpose-built around parts from spec through scale, with AI ingestion, true flexible cost breakdowns (CBD) on every bid sheet, any-format quote analysis, and a shared 20,000-supplier network.

Is LightSource good for indirect spend?

No. LightSource has no catalogs, punch-out, requisitions, or tail-spend marketplace; its object model is engineered parts with revisions, drawings, and BOMs. Companies with significant indirect spend keep a suite or intake tool for that work and use LightSource for direct-materials sourcing.
